Sweet and Sour Tomato chutney is a very delicious sweet and sour chutney recipe. It can be served as a side dish with rice or it can be served with chapathi, Idli, Dosa etc. It is very popular recipe of Assam. In Assam it is called Tok. It is basically preparation of Tomato with additional sourness and some added sweetness into it. It can be served as a side dish. Necessary Ingredients For This Recipe:
Tomato 2 large cut into slices,
Thekera Thenga(Kokum or Turmerind can also be used)
Mustard oil 1 tbsp,
Mustard seeds 1 tsp,
Turmeric powder 1/4 tsp,
Red chilli powder 1/2 tsp,
Jeggery 1 small piece,
Salt as per taste.
Step By Step Method Of Cooking Sweet and Sour Tomato Chutney:
First Step: Soak Thekera Tenga 2 or 3 slices for 15 minute ( Turmerind or Kokum can also be used).
Second Step: Wash and clean the tomato and cut into slices.
Third Step: Heat 1 tbsp Mustard oil into a pan. Let it crackle.
Fourth Step: Add sliced tomatoes and mix very evenly.
Fifth Step: Add salt as per taste. Add turmeric powder also and mix evenly.
Sixth Step: Cook until tomatoes getting soft. Flame should be low.
Seventh Step: Now add some jeggery and mix evenly.
Eighth Step: Add thekera thenga with soaked water and mix it nicely.
Ninth Step: Now add some redchilli powder also and mix nicely.
Tenth Step: Let it cook for five more minutes in low flame.
Eleventh Step: This five min low cooking is necessary because sourness of thekera comes out while boiling and taste will come out nice.
Chutney is ready. This chutney is very delicious. Thekera Tenga adds additional sourness to it with a nice flavor. It can be served as a side dish with chapathi, Rice or Idli.
Thekera Tenga: Garcinia pedunculata, popularly known as Bar Thekera in Assam, It is an evergreen tree and related to the more familiar purple mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana). The tree is found in south-eastern regions of Asia such as parts of Myanmar and north-eastern parts of India like Assam.
Usually fruit is eaten ripe or raw. It can also be preserved for years. Basically ripe or raw fruit is cut into slices and dried in sun and preserved for years. It is used traditionally in Assam to cure many ailments like dysentery or caugh.
NB: Always soak Thekera Tenga slices for at least 15 minutes because it is sun dried so it is very hard its sourness would come out when soaked it for at least for 15 minutes otherwise it has to be cooked more.
